The way we decorate the walls in our homes has evolved, and there’s a lot you can do.
Wall decor adds personality and warmth to your space, moves your eye around the room, and creates a mood or emotion. It can also help inspire a room’s design. Instead of simply choosing whatever matches the furnishings, you’re able to express your individual style and showcase what brings you joy.
“I think anything that’s in your house should have meaning,” Design Consultant Betsy Johnson said. “I’m not picking something at the store because it has the colors that match my room. Everything that’s on my walls has meaning.”
We sat down with Betsy and the rest of our Pembroke team to get their insight and ideas on wall decor.

Floating shelves
Floating shelves give you the freedom to display anything you want, whether it’s photos, small sculptures and decorative objects, or a mix of both. You have the flexibility to change out the decor during the seasons/holidays or whenever you need a fresh look.
Mirrors
Design Consultant Joanna Tisko shared that a mirror is a good staple piece to have in your home. It can act as the focal point of a room, and you can even place smaller pieces around it to create one cohesive visual.
Local art
Our Pembroke team is all for local artists. Not only can you support someone’s work and their business, but you can bring elements of your local area into your home.
Groupings/grids
If you have multiple photos or smaller pieces of art you’d like to display, you can group them together on your wall instead of putting up one large piece. This is a great approach if you live in an apartment and don’t have as much space.
Functional art
Wall decor doesn’t have to be just for aesthetics; it can be functional as well. Whether it’s a clock, baskets, or plants, you can get more than one use out of your art.
Bookcases
Bookcases can take up a large wall in your home, and you don’t have to only put books on them. You can fill the shelves with mementos and other decorative objects you love.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper can add color and character to your space, and you don’t have to put it everywhere. Whether you do an accent wall or cover all the walls in a room, choose something that brings you joy every time you see it.
“I used wallpaper that looks like wood boards as a decorative element,” Lucia explained. I love it so much. I never get sick of it.”
Kids art
Whether you have kids of your own or younger nieces and nephews, they’re always coming up with colorful, imaginative paintings and drawings. What’s great is you can showcase their artwork on your walls.
“I love kids’ art,” said Design Consultant Cheryl Harrington. “Put it in a nice frame and create a grid of those pictures.”
Plates
Decorative plates are a fun, creative way to fill your walls. You may have collected some over the years and need a place for them, or maybe you have older ones that belong in your family. Either way, you can get a wall mount to display them on for guests to see when they visit.
