Multifunctional furniture is just what it sounds like: furniture that serves more than one purpose. It can help save you money (who doesn’t love that?) and space if you live in a smaller home or just want something convenient.
Some of our team members shared what their favorite multifunctional pieces are. Would any of them work in your home? Read on to find out!
Sulley Comfort Sleeper
A sleeper sofa is made for sitting, lounging, and, you guessed it, sleeping. Anyone who doesn’t have an extra bedroom but is looking for additional sleep space will enjoy being able go from sofa to sleeper in a few simple steps. One of American Leather’s Comfort Sleepers, like the Gaines or the Sulley, would work perfectly:
“It is a great sleeper to sleep on and a great sofa to sit on, and it comes in so many styles and fabrics or leathers,” said Betsy Johnson, our Pembroke Store Manager.
Anita Munoz, who works as a Design Consultant in Cambridge, echoed Betsy’s thoughts. She also pointed out that these sleepers have beautiful lines, several mattress choices, and they’re long-lasting and comfortable.
The Monika Sleeper is another option that Richa Sinha, a Design Consultant in Framingham, favors: “It is a low profile sofa with simple lines. I like that you can open just one side mattress and it becomes like a chaise if only one person wants to lounge and the other prefers to sit up. And you can open both sides to make a bed.”
Reveal Lift Coffee Table
Looks can be deceiving, and sometimes you’ll find that a table is more than just a table. BDI, for example, designs sleek lift tables like the Serif that are ideal for remote work days and at-home hang outs. You could even bring it outside if you wanted to work from your deck or patio or use it as an end table while enjoying some nice weather.
Other examples of BDI’s lift tables:
“In this world of spatially challenged rooms, especially in city living, this table does it all. It can be used as a coffee table, dining table, and workstation.” - Teri Carrier, Interior Designer, Commercial Properties
“It can function as a living room coffee table and can turn into an at-home work station! Pretty neat! It allows you to create a comfortable atmosphere to go from lounging to working in one spot. It's highly functionable and beautifully engineered.” - Kristin Jablonski, Design Consultant in Cambridge
“It's a triple threat: cocktail table, storage piece, and dining table. I love having all of these things in one slick, modern package.” - Georgianna Stevens, Cambridge Store Manager
Baxter Storage Ottoman
Ed Taylor, our Digital Marketing Coordinator, is all for a good storage ottoman. Not only will you be able to keep blankets and other items inside, but you can rest your feet on it or even place a tray on top to turn it into a cocktail table. If you’re looking for one, the Baxter Storage Ottoman comes in three different sizes and is plenty big so you can take advantage of its multiple uses.
Heartwood Tall Chest
The Heartwood Tall Chest serves as a spacious storage piece in any room it goes in. Jo-Anne Lucas, who works in our Middleton Design Center, loves the Heartwood for its versatility.
“As someone who technically lives in a tiny home, I am always looking for pieces that I can use in any room in the house,” she shared. “I have given suggestions to customers on how to use this piece. While it’s great for the bedroom, I certainly would use it in the bathroom as a linen press, or in the kitchen as a pantry cabinet (you always need drawers for towels, pot holders, and a silverware drawer).”
Terrace Console Table (shown with Terrace Rectangular Cocktail Table)
A benefit to having a console table is that it can be used in different spaces throughout your home.
“I am a huge fan of the console table. It can be a desk, console table, or a hall table,” said Stephanie Birchenough, our Online Store Manager. Options like the Taper Leg Console Table or the Terrace Console Table would work well in multiple areas depending on what you need.
Manchester Bedroom Wall Unit
For the bedroom, you can have it all in one piece of furniture like the Manchester Bedroom Wall Unit: “It is multifunctional because it can serve as a makeup station, closet, storage system, and a desk,” said Curt Lestan, our Videographer. He likes that the Manchester offers plenty of storage no matter what you’re using it for, plus it can be customized to fit your needs.
