Since its founding in 1969, LEE Furniture has dedicated itself to producing high-quality furniture with a strong focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Over the decades, the company has evolved to become a leader in eco-friendly manufacturing, pioneering the use of recycled materials, sustainable fabrics, and innovative upcycling processes. Through thoughtful practices, like early waste reduction initiatives and the introduction of the naturalLEE program, LEE has set the standard for sustainable furniture production.

Early Commitment to Sustainability

LEE Furniture's journey towards sustainability began in the early 1980s when the company made the decision to eliminate chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from its foam cushions before it became a requirement. CFCs, which are harmful chemicals that deplete the ozone layer, were commonly used in manufacturing at the time. By choosing to eliminate CFCs, LEE not only demonstrated environmental responsibility but also set a precedent for other companies in the industry to follow.

LEE also initiated waste reduction and recycling programs across every aspect of its manufacturing process. This included minimizing waste created during production, reusing materials wherever possible, and establishing recycling protocols for materials like fabric, cardboard, and foam. These efforts significantly reduced the company’s environmental footprint and laid the foundation for future eco-friendly initiatives.

Innovations in Sustainable Manufacturing with naturalLEE

In 2006, LEE took a significant step forward in its commitment to sustainability with the introduction of the naturalLEE program. This initiative was designed to create high-quality, environmentally-friendly furniture using innovative materials and sustainable practices. The naturalLEE program has a range of features, each selected to minimize environmental impact while maintaining the comfort and durability that customers expect from LEE products.

These features include:

Soy-based cushions

Traditional petroleum-based foam was replaced with soy-based alternatives, significantly reducing the use of non-renewable resources.

Fibers made from recycled plastic

Upholstery materials were created using fibers from recycled plastic bottles, giving new life to materials that would otherwise contribute to landfill waste.

Organic fabrics for upholstery

The program prioritized the use of organic fabrics, which are produced without harmful pesticides or chemicals, promoting a healthier home environment and reducing the ecological footprint.

Springs made from 80% recycled metal

The springs in LEE’s furniture were manufactured using 80% recycled metal, minimizing the need for new raw materials and conserving natural resources.

By incorporating the benefits of naturalLEE into their products, LEE continues to provide customers with stylish, comfortable furniture that supports a healthier planet.

Sustainable Impact

One of the most remarkable outcomes of LEE's sustainability efforts is the donation of over 142,515 trees to American Forests through sales’ of naturalLEE products. These contributions support reforestation efforts across the United States, helping to restore ecosystems, improve air quality, and combat climate change.

Additionally, LEE's use of sustainable materials in production has led to substantial resource conservation. The company saves 64 gallons of crude oil per day, which, over a year, equals the energy required for 28 trips around the world.

LEE's products also have an impact on waste reduction. For example, each back cushion made by LEE uses an average of 116 recycled plastic bottles, effectively diverting these materials from landfills and oceans and giving them a second life in durable, stylish furniture.

LEE has achieved significant results in recycling and waste management. The company successfully recycles over 95% of all manufacturing waste, including plastic, fabric, cardboard, cotton, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper. In 2007 alone, LEE Industries recycled 41,280 pounds of plastic, 141,060 pounds of fabric and upholstery material, 145,600 pounds of cardboard, 13,116 pounds of cotton, and 10,020 pounds of plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and paper.

These impressive statistics reflect LEE’s ongoing dedication to making a positive environmental impact through thoughtful, sustainable practices. By continually seeking new ways to reduce waste, conserve resources, and promote eco-friendly materials, LEE demonstrates that responsible manufacturing is not just possible but essential for a healthier planet.

Continual Efforts and Future-Focused Sustainability

LEE Furniture’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop with past successes—it is an ongoing mission. The company continually seeks ways to maximize material by optimizing fabric and leather usage, reducing scrap, and finding creative solutions to reuse leftover materials. Through these efforts, LEE ensures that every piece of fabric, foam, or metal is used as efficiently as possible, minimizing waste while maintaining the high quality customers expect. LEE also requires all vendors to follow a strict Code of Conduct, ensuring that every partner upholds high ethical and environmental standards.

LEE’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that making responsible choices today will shape a better tomorrow. From resource conservation to sustainable partnerships, every decision LEE makes reflects a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. As the company continues to evolve, its focus remains on producing beautiful, eco-conscious furniture that contributes to a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.

LEE Furniture’s commitment to sustainability is woven into every aspect of its business, from using recycled materials and soy-based cushions to supporting reforestation and minimizing waste. With a dedication to responsible manufacturing, LEE continues to innovate and inspire, proving that quality furniture and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
