July Buzz
Green, green what does it mean? Is there anyone on the planet
who hasn’t heard about ‘going green’? If not, have
no fear because now there are green directories, green education programs
and green websites that can set you straight. I am totally a ‘green’ believer
but all this green talk can make a person blue. Speaking of which I
wish we had all gone ‘blue’ instead of green seeing that most
of the earth is water and I personally prefer the color blue over green….it
brings out my eyes.
Anyway, I digress.
What I love about the renewed green movement is that we, as keepers of this
planet, are being more thoughtful on how we live. Recycling, re-claiming,
re-purposing and re-investing in our lives. Being in the furniture industry
I appreciate the fact that there are upholstery manufacturers in this country
that use reclaimed wood and reusable steel; all the ingredients that keep
a piece of furniture from ending up in a landfill. Now re-purposed furniture
is a great idea but I must point out that your parents would have had to
invest in good quality furniture for it to last 25 years. Furniture of
higher quality is an important part of the green movement, starting with
FSC certified wood, soy-based cushions and water-base paints. These ingredients
create a product that you can pass on to future generations. How green
is that?
Think about it, you spend $3000 on
a dining room set which you can own for 15-30 years and then pass it on to
your children; so really, all those wonderful memories you’ve created
in your dining room cost you less than $15 a month. Holidays and birthdays
are celebrated, homework is completed, families get to know each other better,
and in our house some serious issues have been solved at our dining room
table. I’ve gotten to know my children’s friends growing up which
brought me closer to my kids.
Good times.
Last but certainly not least, I hope when we all make any
purchases we try and support our local economy. Less freight, less packaging,
supporting local businesses, a good idea, right? Of course I’m
in the business of selling furniture and want people to have things made
to last and enjoy. So go ahead; invite your friends over or cook your
family Sunday dinner, get to know your kids and their friends and create
some everlasting memories. Buzz.
